What is hardscaping?
Hardscaping is the installation of any hard material like brick, fieldstone, boulders, and blocks into the landscape. Typically, the hard materials are used for patios, walkways, driveways, decorative walls, and retaining walls. Other hardscape applications include placing boulders around your yard to enhance the landscape and building outdoor kitchens.

Concrete pavers, clay bricks, bluestone, flagstone, travertine, limestone, granite, slate, and fieldstone are common types of materials that are used in hardscape projects—and—there are many more hardscape materials.

Base preparation is the foundation of any lasting project.
For example, when installing a patio, unsuitable material like twigs and stones must be removed, proper base material must be installed, then properly compacted and leveled before the first brick, block, or stone paver is laid. Once the pavers are installed, they need to be cut, reinforced with an edge restraint, and swept in with a polymer sand to lock them in tightly. Sealing them with a sealing product will give them a nice sheen and help protect them from weather and wear. When constructed properly, hardscapes last for years and years, and the team at Dave's Landscape Management knows how to construct hardscapes properly.

 

Decorative and retaining walls are constructed with stone or interlocking block.
The same careful base preparation as above must be done for walls as for patios. Additionally, special attention must be paid to proper drainage. Water behind a wall is the # 1 cause of failure - so it is critical to get the drainage right the first time. Geogrid is placed behind walls to strengthen & help prevent them from falling over. If your decorative or retaining wall is over 4’ tall, you’ll need a plan stamped by an engineer.
